Toby Mac

Toby Mac is one of my favorite rappers. Here you'll find information about him and his band.

I've split the page into different groups:

Band History

Toby Mac picture

Toby Mac is a solo project by Toby McKeehan who is part of DC Talk. The DC Talk members all went solo, but didn't split up. Toby McKeehan went back to his rap roots and Toby Mac back rapping. In 2001, he released his first solo album called Momentum. Toby Mac was honored with five Dove Awards, including Rap/Hip-Hop/Dance Album (performer, producer) for Momentum, Rap/Hip-Hop/Dance Song (performer, songwriter) for "Somebody's Watching," and Producer of the Year in 2002. In 2003 he release a remix version of Momentum which featured different artists for each track. In 2004 he released a new album called Welcome to the Diverse City. "It's about taking hip-hop and injecting pop melodies and guitars and harmonicas and whatever else it takes to make the song fit the message I'm trying to communicate." - Toby Mac. In regards to the message, the new album reflects a shift in the way he expresses ideas. Whereas past albums tended to tackle issues in a more universal manner, "Welcome to Diverse City" takes a closer look at specific people, sometimes himself, problems, and situations as real life backdrops to the lyrics.

Toby's Biography

Toby Mac picture

Back in 1989, Toby McKeehan was part of a group named DC Talk. They released their first album in 1989. The group consisted of Michael Tait, Kevin Max, and Toby. The band was rap centered and Toby did the majority of the rapping. The group stayed rap oriented until, 1995, which featured a lot more singing. In 2001 they decided to go solo and released a solo album, which featured 2 songs from each of the members and their own style. Toby went with rapping. As a youth growing up in the northern Virginia suburbs adjacent to DC, Toby recalls immediately being attracted to the beats, rhymes and production of early rap music. "I remember hearing a Kurtis Blow/Trouble Funk song on the radio and going to a local record, and they didn't have it. Since I couldn't drive yet, I took the Metrorail into downtown DC and found a store that had that song; I bought the Sugarhill Gang's Rappers Delight that day as well. From there, it just caught fire. I fell in love with hip-hop music." In 1994, Toby McKeehan started Gotee records with Joey Elwood. He signed to Forefront Records, but he is a producer for Gotee Records and co-founder.
